Is Jordan Binnington Still The Guy For St. Louis?

Who should be playing goalie for the St. Louis Blues?

Jordan Binnington has struggled this season so far and Ville Husso has played well. Is Jordan Binnington still the guy for St. Louis? We answer that in our article here on Saint Louis Sports.

Is Jordan Binnington Still The Guy For St. Louis?

As St. Louis currently sits in second place in the Central Division, there is a lot of talk outside the arena on Jordan Binnington and his play. Many are wondering and many are asking if he is still the guy for St. Louis. The goalie that led them to a Stanley Cup, the first in franchise history, and his future is being questioned by many.

While Jordan Binnington is struggling, it also goes to show how good Husso is playing. Husso has won his last four starts going back to December 7th against the Florida Panthers. When Husso was hurt, Charlie Lindgren filled in and won his first five starts as a Blues goalie. Through all of this, Binnington still has to be the guy for St. Louis.

Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington addresses controversial tweets -

He is being paid to perform as he did in 2019. Now he cannot continually hold the play that he did in that season but he has to be close and so as of late, Binnington has not been doing that. Binnington has a 3.05 goals-against average and a .906 save percentage. Binnington has yet to have his save percentage drop below .900.

Not that often are goalies around for a long time. You have your greats that make careers in this position but the goalie spot is like the NFL running back. The shelf life is very short, and there are always younger, faster, and smarter players working their way up the food chain. I am not saying Binnington will be a Hall of Famer and a long-time goalie, but I am also not saying that it is his time to go either.

Who do you play going forward?

In 2019, when Jordan Binnington was introduced to St. Louis fans, he was replacing Jake Allen who had been the star of the team before that. Jake Allen was a top-tier goalie but due to the bad play of the Blues, they had to go in a different direction. Sometimes those calls need to be made for the betterment of the team.

Since 2018-19, Binnington’s save percentage has declined each year. As mentioned above, he is approaching his lowest save percentage to where it has never dipped below .900. In 22 starts this season, Binnington only has one shutout. Last season he did not have a shutout.

St. Louis Blues Ville Husso Not Great But Not To Blame Either

Going forward you have to play who is hot and right now, Ville Husso is the hot goaltender. In the long run, Binnington may still be the best chance to have success and to win. Right now, it has to be Husso in net for the St. Louis Blues.

There is no need to hit the panic button right now in St. Louis over goalie controversy, but it is something to consider looking down the road. If Binnington’s stats continue to decrease over the years, then yes we may have an issue, but right now it is all about winning hockey games and getting Binnington back into top shape.

Central Division Race

Sitting in second place the Blues have to make every move they can to ensure they make the playoffs. This roster that has been constructed may be one of the best offensive lineups we have seen. When healthy, the Blues are easily contenders in the Central Division, the Western Conference, and for the Stanley Cup.

Right now, the Blues are looking up at Colorado, the team that swept them from the playoffs a season ago. The Blues are four points behind Colorado after their win over Anaheim last night. The Blues next game is Friday in Seattle, the first trip for the Blues at the Kraken. The Blues are set for a three-game road trip, including a trip to Vancouver and Calgary.

After the road trip, the Blues will return home for one more game before the All-Star break. Jordan Kyrou will represent St. Louis and the Blues in Vegas the first week of February. Kyrou leads the team in points this season, with 39. He is tied for second-most goals with 14, one behind Ivan Barbashev.
