Cardinals Total Win Prediction for 2021 Season

The St. Louis Cardinals started the 2021 season on a bang! The Cardinals had an explosive opening day in their 11-6 win over the Cincinnati Reds. As the season progresses, there are many questions about how the Cardinals will perform this season. Everyone loves starting the season off on a good note, but as the saying goes, it’s not how you start but how you finish. Let’s take a look at the Cardinal’s total win prediction for the 2021 season.

St. Louis Cardinals Vegas Odds

  • Win 2021 World Series: +2500
  • Win NL Pennant: +1200
  • Win NL Central +155

Cardinals Overlook

The Cardinals have not had a losing season since going 78-84 in 2007, which is pretty impressive. Their organization has proven that they can be a very consistent playoff contender, and they have proven so over the past 13 seasons. According to FanGraphics, the Cardinals will win 87 games this season.

Cardinals Starting Lineup

  1. Tommy Edman
  2. Paul Goldschmidt
  3. Nolan Arenado
  4. Paul Dejong
  5. Tyler O’Neill
  6. Yadier Molina
  7. Dylan Carlson
  8. Justin Williams
  9. Jack Flaherty

Aside from Paul Goldschmidt, the Cardinals made a very big acquisition; Nolan Arenado. Besides Arenado’s 2020 slump, he has performed extremely well. Prior to the 2020 shortened season, Arenado has a monster 5 seasons. In 2015 Arenado hit 42 home runs, 130 RBI’s, and a .287 batting average.

In 2016 he hit 41 home runs, 133 RBI’s, and a .294 batting average. In 2017 Arenado hit 37 home runs, 130 RBI’s and finished the season with a .309 batting average. In 2018, Arenado finished the season with 38 home runs, 110 RBI’s, and a .297 batting average. Lastly, in 2019 Arenado hit .315 with 41 home runs and 118 RBI’s. Arenado has clearly proved that he can be an impact player and still perform consistently at a high level.

He is the perfect guy for the Cardinals to help give their starting pitchers as much run support as they need.

Cardinals Starting Pitching

  1. Jack Flaherty
  2. Adam Wainwright
  3. Carlos Martinez
  4. Daniel Poncedeleon
  5. John Gant

Jack Flaherty and Adam Wainwright are definitely the centers of attention regarding the Cardinals starting rotation. The 39-year old right-hander is currently signed to a one-year contract worth approximately $8 million. He will tie Bob Gibson for the second-most seasons with the St Louis Cardinals with 17 seasons under his belt. As a 10-year veteran with the Cards, Wainwright can only hope to write the script to his own ending with the Cards.

Because of his age, many baseball fans are questioning his ability to perform this year and help the Cardinals win a lot of games this season. Although his performance is up in the air so far in the 2021 season, his loyalty to St. Louis is unmatched and should give him some steam to fire his season up. Wainwright finished the shortened 2020 MLB season with a 3.15 ERA, going 5-3 in 10 games started. Let’s see how he performs this year.

Players Who Needs to Perform

1. Dylan Carlson

Carlson has only played one season in the big leagues, but due to an extended, normal 162 game season, he will have many opportunities to prove himself at the plate and in the outfield. In 2020, he hit .200 in 119 plate appearances.

2. Jack Flaherty

Flaherty had 231 strikeouts in 2019 with a 2.75 ERA. Although he had a 4.91 ERA in the shortened 2020 season, he’s still an elite pitcher and will need to show up and play at an extremely competitive level this year. The NL Central is definitely up for grabs, and it will all come down to pitching and run support.

The Cardinals look really good going into the season. With massive additions to the lineup like Arenado, and Yadier Molina behind the dish, commanding the field, and gassing runners all over the diamond with his sub 1.9 pop-time, the Cardinals look like they have a bright future ahead of this season.
